Wrap Up: Camp 2014: Week 3

A good spy never gets caught . . . but a great spy never refuses a mission, especially when badges (and bragging rights) are at stake! Top secret spy units 004 and 005 accepted their first Spy Week mission—a quadruple challenge of Ghost, Bombardment, Blade, and Medic dodge ball games. Agents adapted to the twists in each game and were awarded badges for grand displays of energy, awareness, strategy, and shrewdness.

Campers in the horse program took a brief ride in the woods Monday. Others looked on as horse core members walked Pickles, Maxwell, Blackjack, Moe, and Roxy to the trail. Riders were seasoned and have been attending MCC horse cores for a few years now. By all accounts, the horses were great and the kids had a wonderful time. They hope to ride along the trail again next week!

On Tuesday night, all four cabins ventured into the woods to reach their respective campsites. To have their weekly cookout, the ladies gathered at the Amphitheater while the guys went to Adventure Hill. With sleeping bags in tow, they remained at their sites to sleep overnight. Even a few hesitant campers found something memorable about the experience—making s’mores, playing games, talking under the stars until everyone fell asleep, singing and telling stories by the campfire, or discovering wildlife. The combined cabins at the sites allowed for a special thought-provoking (and silly) amedita before girls’ and boys’ cabins met up to play “Scout”.

The spy games resumed Wednesday evening for 004’s and 005’s on Upper Field. Agents were presented with the mission of successfully completing four separate stations or obstacles in the least amount of time. Each one tested essential spy qualities. The Ultimate Warrior challenge required skills in combat, while craftiness was key for the decoding challenge. Spies must be brave, as well as intelligent! The wall-climbing station was a test of agility because, as any spy knows, it can come in handy should the need arise to scale a tall structure in a sly escape!

The final challenge was of stealth. Agents maneuvered a maze of “lasers” to reach a priceless treasure under heavy guard. The spy teams who completed their challenges in the fastest time were decorated with badges for combat, craftiness, climbing, and stealth. Campers made their own disguises and spy gadgets in the Arts and Crafts and Clayworks cores throughout the week. They were so creative! These sophisticated spies used clay to mold lots of things, like a gadget concealed in lipstick or paper and Popsicle sticks to make signature mustaches or sideburns.

Finally, this week, we had the pleasure of recognizing the birthdays of two of our very own spies. Being at MCC surrounded by friends and fun is a great way celebrate a birthday. However, we can’t say much about the celebrations . . . just that cake and ice cream may or may not have been involved. Happy birthday to all of our campers born in the month of July!!!

Wrap Up: Camp 2014: Week 2

Week Two brought more than double the campers as week One! MCC is off to a great start, and we hope to see more campers and create more memories for each one as the summer continues!

The Hunger Games week promised to be unpredictable . . . and it was in more ways than anyone had anticipated. Campers were taken by surprise when they learned that the week’s normally scheduled events had been rearranged, building anticipation for the final arena match between districts, or teams, later in the week. The cookout/campout was on Monday instead of Tuesday night, and the dance was on Tuesday instead of Thursday night. Initially, this seemed to throw campers off, but there was no time for distractions. They needed to be focused if they were to earn money for their districts in several mini challenges or get in some much-needed practice for the Hunger Games Arena on Thursday.

Even the weather threw us a curveball! It rained Wednesday just as we were planning to play laser tag. Most agreed, though, that the rain was a welcomed deviation as it cooled everyone down on a pretty hot day. Despite the rain, MCC staff made it a fun night, gathering campers in the dining hall for an evening of games, ice cream, and a movie—Frozen. The kids knew the words to every song (and if we’re telling the truth, so did many of the staff).

Districts earned between 40 and just over 300 dollars in their pre-Hunger Games challenges. This money would later be used to purchase game advantages to give teams the edge over others. In a challenge fit for the Roman Colosseum, pre-selected district members known as tributes fought for victory with foam swords and balls. The arena was complete with strategically placed shields, walls, a poisoned ball, and even a lofty stand for the announcer. Counselors acted as mentors, coaching their district members from just outside the sidelines. The Games lasted for over an hour past sundown, but we’re happy to report that the only real injury was to the pride of the fallen districts. All in all, it was a great Hunger Games week and campers displayed good attitudes and sportsmanship. So until next week, “May the odds be ever in your favor . . .”

P.S. Campers discovered a turtle in front of one of the cabins during Nature core on Thursday. They saw it and couldn’t resist a detour from their trip to the woods for a quick lesson in turtle fun-facts and respecting nature. Unfortunately for us, we were unable to put this particular species of turtle in our turtle pit because it’s considered a protected species, but it was fun to interact with nature up close!

Wrap Up: Camp 2014: Week 1

Super Heroes vs. Super Villains Week

Super Heroes vs. Super Villains Week was the perfect start to the MCC 2014 camp season. Naturally, the theme brought out the spirit of competition in everyone—it was contagious! Early on, new additions exchanged pleasantries and veteran campers and counselors reminisced and caught up on what’s happened since last summer, but ties quickly vanished when counselors and campers were divided among super groups of X-Men, The Avengers, Legion of Doom, and Anti-Justice League. The competition became real once the groups’ super hero and super villain knowledge was put to the test in the amphitheater with THE MOST DIFFICULT TRIVIA GAME KNOWN TO MAN.

As with all great rivalries, the competition came down to a test of physical strength when everyone played “Nuke ‘em” during Monday’s evening activity. Endowed with various abilities of intelligence, strength, speed, regeneration, shape-shifting, and psychic powers, the four teams “nuked” a volley ball to eliminate members of the opposing team one-by-one—or in the case of those with super strength, two-by-two! Other powers included super speed, which allowed players to move around the court and throw the ball from anywhere they chose, while regeneration gave a player two lives. After more than four championship rounds, The Avengers won first place!

The teams took a break Tuesday long enough to explore the woods and appreciate the outdoors together. Each cabin gathered at various designated spots in the woods to cook out over an open fire created by our very capable counselors. The food was good, and the conversation was even better! Before nightfall, campers and counselors were able to fit in a game of Scout. At dusk, campers hurried to find their best hiding spot a few feet into the woods, then race to base where a counselor is holding a light without being caught. A few rounds of Scout were all they needed before going to sleep on the blacktop basketball court where everyone camped out under the stars.

The competition resumed for Wednesday night’s All Camp scavenger hunt. With the prospect of earning up to 1,000 points, the super groups split amongst themselves and scoured the camp grounds for ten cleverly concealed items. All searched tirelessly despite having no idea what each item would be worth. The clues were really challenging and had groups looking in some of the most ridiculous places in the camp! When the hunt was over, each team was awarded the points they’d earned from retrieving each item.

On Thursday, campers had a great time at our weekly dance! They got to request their favorite songs and dance like no one was looking. After all the competition and camaraderie, the energetic music and atmosphere were ideal. Being super human is hard work, so everyone took advantage and enjoyed each other’s company

So, the week is ending, and it will soon be time to say goodnight. MCC campers and counselors have had lots of opportunities for friendly competition while learning about themselves, making new friendships, and rekindling old ones.
